Apartments in Split
The city of Split developed from and around the palace of the emperor Diocletian 1700 years ago. The palace was completed in the fourth century, and was built as a palace for the emperor to stay in during the summer and later for the remaining years of his life. Diocletian's palace is the only anicent palace that is still inhabited today.
Althought the old core and palace complex are protected by UNESCO, Split is still full of modern life. Taverns, caffes, bars and boutiques are spread out through the stairs and streets, and incorporated into the stone houses. The centre of the palace is the Peristyle square, which was made of Egyptian granite, and a sphinx that the builder of the palace had brought from Egypt to guard the mausoleum where the emperor Diocletian was later burried. Beneath the palace is a combination of underground rooms where you can find souvenirs that will always remind you of your visit to Split.
